Valentine’s Day Celebrations around the World

Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery.

Celebrations all around the world

  1. Austria has some rather obscure courtship customs that may or may not be associated with Saint Valentine’s Day. Nonetheless, it is customary for a young man to present his beloved with a bunch of flowers on February 14.
  2. The poets of Britain have probably penned the majority of the best-loved romantic verses associated with Saint Valentine. Different regions of the nation celebrate their own customs to honor this day, although the sending of cards and gifts of flowers and chocolates is standard procedure throughout the entire country.
  3. In Denmark, February 14 is mainly a day for the young. It’s a time for romance and exchanging of love tokens. Here, the festival is celebrated in a very conventional manner. Young people send to their beloveds a valentine card on this occasion. The Danish valentine card is famously known as a “lover’s card”.
  4. The Valentine’s Day celebration in Korea is quite alike to the Japanese observance of the festival. As in Japan, Korea witnesses gifting of chocolates and candies from females to males. The favor is returned the same way by the men on March 14, which is referred to as “White Day” similar to the custom in Japan.
  5. In Germany it is a custom for men to buy flowers for their wives or sweethearts on Valentine’s Day. It is important for the men to know what kind and color of flowers to buy. Chocolates and other gifts are also exchanged between spouses and sweethearts.
  6. In Spain, traditionally wives give gifts to their husbands and the husbands give flowers to their wives.
  7. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Taiwan on February 14, but there is also a special Valentine’s Day on July 7 of the lunar calendar, based on an ancient Chinese folktale. Both dates are equally as important. Many men purchase expensive bouquets of roses and other flowers for their sweethearts on these days.
  8. In Israel, Valentine’s Day is a popular time for marriage proposals to be made. Gifts are also exchanged.
  9. Thousands of couples celebrate Valentine’s Day in the Philippines by gathering together for the world record of the most couples kissing at one time. This festivity is called Lovapalooza.
  10. In Thailand, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in unique ways. Among these ways is the joining of two elephants as the world’s largest bride and groom.
  11. Mexicans celebrate Valentine’s Day but the day goes by another name; “Dia de San Valentin” or “Dia del amor y la armistad” is a day of love and friendship.
  12. Valentine’s Day is celebrated a little differently in Japan. The ladies buy chocolate called hon-mei for their boyfriends or husbands. A month later on March 14 the men present gifts of chocolate to the ladies. The latter is called White Day and the chocolate is usually white.

These are some special ways in which Valentine’s Day is celebrated all around the world.
